HUNTERS

Brooklyn's Hunters are a post-thrash-garage-punk band (I dunno, guys) featuring the dueling yelps of Derek Watson on Isabel Almeida. These dirty, distorted guitar/bass/drums jams of mild destruction definitely recall those trashy days of Williamsburg, Brooklyn circa 2002 (this band would've been rolling with Liars and theYeah Yeah Yeahs at, I don't know, Luxx or somewhere.). Remember that era? It was back before the condos controlled Bedford and back when you could smoke in bars while drinking a 32 oz. container of beer for, like, three bucks or something. Those were good days.

So Hunters aren't reinventing any of rock's wheels with this familiar sound. But it's a good sound. It's a sound that makes me want to mix it up in a bout of joyful fisticuffs. So why not let this sound get another solid go-around? I mean, what is this sound supposed to do after retiring ten years ago anyway? How long can this sound sit in Florida and bide its time before a lonely 4:30pm dinner? That's not punk rock, guys!

If you missed that old Brooklyn scene filled with all those wonderfully filthy and superbly scummy bands - here it comes again, I guess. Get on the train this time. If you want to. If not, that's fine too. It's only rock 'n roll, bros.

Now who wants to go get a chicken slice at Anna Maria's and then go explore abandoned piers in the East River?

SAVAGES

London's Savages are a four-piece post-punk band comprised of females (why say all-girl group? we don't say Joy Division was an all-dude group, do we? THINK ABOUT IT).

They were also one of those "buzzy" bands to come out of CMJ 2012. A wise person once said: like sands through the hourglass, so are...the buzzy music festival bands like...err...dust in..the ocean...or something. A different and more succinct wise person once said: Glory Fades. So let's all be careful to not get caught up in the hype of the buzz.

But this band is worth talking about because Savages are really good live. I know. I was there. At 3pm. Drinking well rum. Because it was free. Savages threw around lots of those solid, post-punk stabby jabby guitars (i can say 'stabby jabby' if I want) that make me want to artfully destroy something.

There were all those good bass thumps that sometimes sound like a heartbeat on heroin. And there was all that reverb too. Oh yes. There was lots and lots of reverb. There was also lots of confidence - particularly from frontwoman Jehnny Beth. She can yelp and swagger with the best of them and I will follow her wherever she made lead me.

Savages aren't exactly creating a sound you've never heard before. We've certainly heard this sound before. Not just back in 1981. But in 2001 too. It's 2012 now. And the sound is still here. It's called post-punk. But it's probably post-post-punk by now. But hey, at least it's a good sound.

Will Savages ride this hype train until they're upgraded to a buzzy private jet - I don't know. Give me some time to think about it. CMJ just ended and I hit it pretty hard this year. But at least I was out there hitting it hard for you, guys. For YOU.

LEONARD FRIEND

You know one of those bands that you're just sure is going to "make it" (whatever that means, but if we're honest with each other we both know what that means) and then don't? For me, The XYZ Affair was one of those bands. I always thought they wrote power-pop hooks that were as catchy as any Rivers Cuomo ever did (am I tossing around hyperbole there? perhaps.... perhaps not.... ). But for whatever reason, that band didn't find a sustainable audience.

Luckily though, frontman Alex Feder is still making music (and I'm not even talking about his gig as a touring musician for a massive world famous pop star either - look it up). Feder's newest project is Leonard Friend. Feder is Friend. Friend is Feder.

Using the same amazing tenor you came to love when he was in The XYZ Affair (oh wait, you didn't love them - see my point above - but it's never too late to go back and check them out, guys! it'll be, like, how Van Gogh was never appreciated in his lifetime- am I tossing hyperbole? perhaps.... perhaps not.... ), Leonard Friend is seductive synth-pop. It's polished and poppy and good for naked necking or whatever it is the kids do these days (we hear "sexting" is a new popular activity involving technology).

Perhaps a Chad Valley or a Twin Shadow could be apt comparisons to Leonard Friend. Or, you know, Michael Jackson. It's definitely not power-pop like XYZ though. Just in case you were expecting that. But you weren't expecting that BECAUSE YOU NEVER GAVE THAT BAND ITS DUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I digress. Consider getting into Leonard Friend if you like sexy electro jams like I like sexy electro jams. And then consider seeing Leonard Friend play these jams live. That will give you the opportunity to apologize to Feder in person for neglecting his previous band, The XYZ AFFAIR. Shame. Shame. Shame. (It's ok. It happens.)

BIG UPS

Big Ups reminds me that ohhhhh, yeah - bands can be fun! I totally almost forgot that. You know, with all the seriousness going on in music these days (because if you're serious - mostly boring people will seriously take your mostly boring band very seriously).

NYC's Big Ups are a completely fun and instantly likeable band (except for the people that don't instantly like them - but this isn't for those H8TRS - go listen to a tortured troubadour and remain wary and weary) that plays high energy ramshackle punk rock that you'll want to get messy and sweaty to.

As I blast Big Ups fine three song 7" from my computerss speakers (oh don't you worry about me and my sound system - I've got a good subwoofer), I can almost hear the smiles of these four dudes over the riffs and between the shouts. They're having a good time, I just know it. And if they're not - they certainly fake it well.

Big Ups is a band you should go out and see when you feel like mixing it up - in a pleasant way. Don't hurt anyone out there, guys. Be cool. Be nice. Be fun. Long. Live. Punk. Rock.

Sleepies will haunt your reality and destroy your dreams.

Brooklyn's Sleepies are a good sludgy punk band whose pummeling guitars get you all revved up and make you want to, I don't know, tell your boss off or go punch some dry wall that looked at you wrong or something. If you like it loud, this band will give you a fantastically good time.

I hear some Sex Pistols' influence here, but maybe that's because I was just listening to the Sex Pistols before writing this. Or, maybe it's because they sound like the Sex Pistols. You be the judge, dear Rockness reader. Listen to the Sleepies song at the end of this profile and let ME know.

Oh yeah, Sleepies' new full-length debut album was produced by The Men's Ben Greenberg. The Men are a good band, too. And their previous EP release was produced by Nick Slyvester ofMr. Dream. Mr. Dream are also a good band. Good bands FOREVA!!!!!!!!

Go see Sleepies. You can't NOT have a good time at this show. Unless you don't like it loud. If that's the case, you're going to hate these guys.

Ice Choir

Kurt Feldman is one talented dude. You may know him as the drummer of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but he was also the mastermind behind the exceptional and gone-too-soon 8-bit-dream-gaze band, Depreciation Guild. And now, his latest (one man) band to conquer pop is called Ice Choir. Man, I love Ice Choir. They're just going '80s light station FM pop all the way with no regrets and no turning back. This is Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" meets Spandau Ballet's "True" meets George Michael's "Careless Whisper" meets The Cars "Drive" all the way.

And those are four amazing songs. Ok, the "Careless Whisper" saxophone solos fall into what I call "a grey area," but otherwise they're all pretty much pop perfection.

Start with Ice Choir's song "Teletrips" and tell me you aren't hearing what I'm hearing. And what are we both hearing again? Oh, that's right: the soft pop perfection of 1983-1985. Get the Ice Choir's full-length debut on Underwater Peoples (one of our very favorite labels).

Electric Youth

Toronto retro '80s synth-pop duo Electric Youth is singer Bronwyn Griffin and producer Austin Garrick. They take their name from a Debbie Gibson album (!) and their most famous song is "A Real Hero." That was the perfect pop collaboration with College that ultimately made it onto the "Drive" soundtrack (the final scene, no less! you know, that super crucial part when Gosling is getting all weak and he shuts his eyes and... well, never mind since I forgot to start this with "spoiler alert").

Anyway, "A Real Hero" is one of the best pop songs of the last five years. That's not hyperbole; that's truth. And yes, Electric Youth have a lot of other super solid jams besides that one. You could spend hours and hours on their SoundCloud page listening to all the good stuff they've done. I know because I've done it and I suggest you do it too... if you like good retro '80s synth-pop. But you do. What kind of a monster doesn't like good synth-pop?!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to recreate that final scene in "Drive" in this parking lot down the street. BTW, does anyone know if ketchup can pass for blood? How about Hawaiian Punch? In my refrigerator I have ketchup and I have Hawaiian punch. Hopefully one of them will make the grade.

Infinity Shred shred

Is that not the coolest band name in the world, or what? And it's new, too. These two guys used to be known as Starscream, but they had to change their name due to something dumb like "the law."

But no matter what they're calling themselves these days, this Brooklyn band has been pretty damn awesome for a while now. Along with their pals Anamanaguchi, Infinity Shred is one of the leading 8-bit bands cruising around in magical 8-bit land. (8-bit: it's more than just "video game music," kids.)

Infinity Shred's drawn-out, space-y songs take their sweet time getting into their groove; but once they get there... look out because you've just been hooked. Did you ever like those early Trans Am albums from way back when? I did. Infinity Shred kind of reminds me of those couple classics... meets Com Truise... meets Fang Island... meets I almost made it through without mentioning Nintendo.

Basically, Infinity Shred makes jams that'll take you to Mars, man.

Grimes

Grimes's website

Canada's Grimes is actually Montreal's Claire Boucher. I guess you can call this ethereal atmospheric electronic music, but then you'd probably want to walk away from this profile at best and... well... let's not get into worst case scenarios here.

You and I both know that what I just said to describe Grimes' music means absolutely nothing. After all, Enya (and whatever Enya’s sister or cousin or whoever that relative was who was riding Enya’s coattails for a while there circa 1994) could also be described as ethereal atmospheric electronic music. And Grimes doesn't sound like Enya. You heard that here first. "Ethereal" music like this is hard to describe. That's why people say things are "ethereal." No one questions "ethereal."

Let's start over and try to do a better job of describing Grimes. How about this, "Grimes sounds like a pop triumph!" Oops, that's another thing that doesn't mean anything. How about, "Whatever Grimes is; chillwave and Dub Step this is not." Closer. How about, "Don't walk! I command you to RUN and see Grimes play!" Farther. Ok, final try. "Grimes is good music made with good machines and sung by a good singer who has a good voice." BOOM! (Grimes also sounds like whales jumping out of the sea in slow motion.)

New Build

New Build's website

Super group alert! Super group alert! New Build features members of Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem (no, Murphy ain't one of 'em... he's too busy checking the charts or something). Now does it really matter what's contained in the rest of this band profile? You're going to want to see New Build because members of Hot Chip and LCD Sounsystem are in this band.

Of course you will. What kind of monster doesn't like Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem? They're both, like, the least offensive bands of all time... well, Hot Chip is anyway. LCD had some "I'm really alt" issues, but every one of their songs made you dance so... pluses and minuses, bros... pluses and minuses. So what does New Build sound like? Do you really want to know? As we just discussed, you're going to go see them play anyway. (FYI: they sound exactly like you think they're going to sound). So I guess that's about it.

Hmm. We seem to have a few more lines to kill before we can totally put this profile to bed. So... has anyone been to any good new pizza spots lately? I'm sure you have. After all, everybody loves pizza. It's like the least offensive food of all time. So everyone be sure to chime in.

Reunited Van Halen Play Blazing Show at Tiny NYC Club

The group debut new song 'She's The Woman,' originally recorded as a demo in 1976

"It's like climbing into a rocket in here," David Lee Roth said as he stepped onto the matchbox-sized stage at New York's 250-capacity Cafe Wha? for Van Halen's first concert in four years. "It's a rocket that comes from way back into the past into what the future's going to look like. Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, ladies and gentlemen!"
With those words Eddie Van Halen kicked into the opening notes of "You Really Got Me" and the crowd –composed almost entirely of journalists and music industry insiders – went absolutely bonkers. Over the next hour, the group played a stunningly tight set of songs from their 1978 debut LP all the way through David Lee Roth's swan song, 1984. It was a show guaranteed to make any crowd go into a collective state of hysteria, but the happiest man in the house could have been Roth himself. Dressed in beige overalls and a Brian Johnson-style newsboy hat, the singer had an ear-to-ear grin on his face all night, especially when he looked over at his 92-year-old uncle Manny – the founder of Cafe Wha? – who was seated in the corner. "Last time I stood on a stage this low I had to have the car back by midnight," Roth joked early in the night. "This is one of our best nights ever."
I stood a good five feet in front of Eddie Van Halen (dressed in ripped jeans and a black t-shirt) and the man played absolutely flawlessly. It was a beautiful sight.  Before the start of a Van Halen tour you never know what Ed you're getting. The 2004 Van Hagar Ed was a drunken, shirtless mess. The 2007/08 reunion Ed was cleaned up and together, and that clearly is the case today. While Roth ordered drinks from the stage and took some shots, Ed restricted himself to bottled water and a couple of Red Bulls.
About half a second after the end of "You Really Got Me," Wolfgang Van Halen played the opening notes of "Running With The Devil." By that point the crazy reality that we were seeing Van Halen in a tiny, sweaty basement club began to kick in. These songs (not to mention the performers) were programmed to rock massive basketball arenas. Seeing that all that energy crammed into a basement club was surreal. It's a shame so few fans outside of the press were able to witness it.
It was clear that Dave's voice isn't quite as strong as it was back in the day, but he more than compensated for that with incredible energy and charisma. It must be said, however, that original bassist Michael Anthony's backing vocals were sorely missed. They need them now more than ever, and as talented a bassist as Wolfgang clearly is (especially for a 20-year-old), it was a real lame move to push Anthony out of the band.
After just two songs, Dave began a long spoken interlude that clearly tested the patience of the Van Halen men. "I could see your naked, steaming eyes," Roth said. "I see a lot of familiar faces. A lot of folks from the media. A lot of folks from the record company. A lot of folks that we grew up with here. How many of you people know Lady Gaga? I was watching her on New Year's Eve with Mayor Bloomberg and it's kind of an interesting story . . ." This went on for a few long minutes, but then Dave screamed out "Somebody Get Me a Doctor!" and all was forgiven.
The return of Roth to the band means that the group's entire history with Sammy Hagar (not to mention Gary Cherone) has essentially been erased. That still leaves them with plenty of great material, and the setlist for the show seemed like the playlist for a classic rock radio station. They also played "Everybody Wants Some!!," "Dance The Night Away," "Hot For Teacher," "Ice Cream Man," "Panama," "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" and "Jump." The only song from their upcoming LP was "She's The Woman," but there's a good reason that it sounded so much like a classic Van Halen song: It's a demo from 1976 that's been circulating in the fan community for years. Parts of it were eventually used on "Mean Street." They have since fleshed out the track, but its inclusion on the new album seems to bolster Sammy Hagar's contention that parts of the disc are recycled old bits – not that it really matters. A good song is a good song and they should use the best material they have available to them.
Midway through a blazing "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" Roth explained to the crowd that it was impossible to leave the stage for an encore, so we were instructed to pretend that they left and came back. The finale of "Jump" didn't quite take off – partially due to the fact that the piped-in keyboards were largely inaudible –but it hardly mattered. Van Halen had braved a crowd that seemingly contained every music journalist in the city, and proved to all of them they still have the goods. They have yet to grant a single interview, but it's clearly all part of a strategy to build buzz around the new disc and tour – though they didn't play their upcoming single "Tattoo."
A setlist taped next to Alex's drum kit said that "Beautiful Girls" and "Unchained" were supposed to wrap up the show, but after "Jump" the band was ushered out a back door and driven away. A new single and video are going to be released soon, and their tour is going on sale January 10th.
The last 14 years have been rough for Van Halen fans. The last three tours featured three different singers, and for most of that time the band was completely inactive. Let's hope this club show is the dawn of a better, more productive era for the band. It sure seems like that's the case.

Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe to Perform with Cannabis Corpse at Cory Smoot Memorial Concert

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe will perform with Cannabis Corpse at Cory Smoot’s memorial concert on January 7. The concert for the former Gwar guitarist–also known as Flattus Maximus–who passed away last month, will be held at the Canal Club in Richmond, Virginia.

Blythe has been called in following the departures from Cannabis Corpse of vocalist Andy “Weedgrinder” Horn and guitarist Nick “Nikropolis” Poulos.
“Cory was the guitarist in Gwar who passed away recently and was a friend of mine who recorded my guest vocals on the Jasta CD,” Blyhte commented. “He leaves a pregnant wife behind [their first child] and a mortgage.
“Cory didn’t have life insurance and his wife is going to need every penny she can get with a kid on the way and bills to pay. Although Gwar is a relatively large band and are doing all they can for Mrs. Smoot, the fact of the matter nobody is rich and times will be hard.
“My friends in Cannabis Corpse were scheduled to play the benefit show, but suddenly are having lineup difficulties. So what the fuck and why not?
“On January 7, Cannabis Corpse WILL play — but I will be singing!
“Come check out some brutal death metal for a good cause! I’ll be working on my death metal voice ’till then, pretending to smoke weed and getting deeper than fuck.  I’m quite confident I can properly do the Cannabis Corpse tunes justice AND add something new. Now I need a ‘weed metal’ name!”

Pandr Eyez

Pandr Eyez's website

London's Pandr Eyez is the duo of vocalist Ferren Gipson (she's got a silky smooth voice) and keys/beats guy Tom Lloyd (he's got silky smooth...fingers?). The music they make is instantly accessible. These jams could seriously be played on mainstream radio right now if mainstream radio knew what was good for them (but mainstream radio, apparently, does not know what's good for them).

So Pandr Eyes rock all sorts of sounds. But think electro meets some nice and warm atmospherics meets some huge bass booms mixed with a little bit of laid-back soul and a mighty small dose of trip-hop (did I really just write 'trip-hop' in a Rockness band profile?!). That description won't totally nail Pandr Eyez' sound (they're too interesting to be nailed so easily), but it'll get you pretty darn close.

Comparisons to The Sneaker Pimps have been tossed around too. But if you're like me, that comparison will make you run away from Pandr Eyez. Please don't. They're different somehow.

The band's EP recently came out on the better-by-the-day label Cascine (Chad Valley is on that label too, so they must be doing something right) and could seriously burst through the indie bubble and into public consciousness. I mean, it probably won't. But it could, guys. It could. Have a listen and you'll see what I mean.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs's website

This guy knows the beats, bros. He knows the beats. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (no way I am writing that out again) is a long name for the thumping electro project of just one dude, Orlando Higginbottom. He's from Oxford, England.

And speaking of which, what is UP with the Oxford music scene cranking out all the big time dance jams lately?! Amazing! Ok, maybe I’m just thinking of Chad Valley and TEED. But that's 2 more big time dance jam masters from Oxford than I've ever thought of before, so... there you go.

Live, this guy doesn't just twiddle some knobs behind some machinery with his head down. This is a SHOW. He throws around confetti (from a gun, obviously) and messes around with silly props and blasts crazy light swirls and just generally creates the perfect environment for a big dance party. And oh yeah, Higginbottom definitely dresses up as a dinosaur when he plays live. So there's that.

Anyway, this guy isn't concerned with being too super serious as he cranks out the club hits. And 90% of the time I will always back that carefree attitude 100% of the time. After all, it's only rock 'n roll... errr... electro. Right? I like this so much I'm going to contradict myself and write out the name again; go see Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. You'll have a good time. I guarantee it*. (*not a guarantee)

Erika Spring

Erika Spring's website

Erika Spring (Forster) has been in some good pop bands over the years. She was in Dirty on Purpose and then in Au Revoir Simone. Did you like those two bands? No, you don't have to answer... I know you did, mate. I know you did.

And now she's going solo. She was all like "screw those bands!" JK, guys. Just a "J" to the "K." But seriously, Erika Spring is laying down some easy and breezy hits. Hits, I tell you. Hits!

Think of her songs as being half sun pop and half haze pop. Wait, maybe that will make you think of smog (no, not Smog). And whatever this is, it's not smoggy.

The sun comes from Erika Spring's perfectly breathy vocal delivery. The haze comes from the drone-ish keys. But then what about the big time beats underneath all of this? What do the beats produce? Rain? Sleet? Snow? No, the beats are what produce the HITS. Don't you see? It's all so simple! The beats always lead to the hits!

Anyway, enough of this. Just go see Erika Spring. You'll be into it just like you were into Dirty on Purpose and Au Revoir Simone. Of course you were into those bands.

King Krule

King Krule's website

King Krule is the moniker of a 17-year-old British kid named Archy Marshall (he totally looks like an Archy, doesn't he?). So the research tells me he's 17, anyway. But allow me to call bullshit on research, because there is no way this dude is a teenager. With a voice as deep and drawling and world weary as this, I wouldn't believe you if you told me he was 37 (ok, maybe 37... but definitely not 27... I draw the LINE at 27).

But let's just pretend the facts are correct for a minute so we can all marvel at how a kid not much older than the pair of shoes I'm wearing can sound like this. He apparently has the weight of the world on his shoulders as he sings about stuff like the loss of pride, the loss of faith, the loss of... well, this guy just seems lost. I believe this is called "disillusionment." Disillusionment foreva!!!

These are slow and strange (mostly) synth + beats songs that are good to chill out to if you're feeling casually depressed. There's a mixture of dawdling electro and dub and even a dash of jazz. It's hard to decipher exactly what's going on here. But it makes me feel like I'm swimming in Lake Codeine. A raging dance party jam master, this guy is not.

His debut EP is coming out on the exceptional True Panther record label. That's going to be a big one I bet, because people are going to like King Krule. Why? People will like this because people like honest music, created by a 17 year old or not. Whatever this guy is, he certainly doesn't appear to be a phony. So cheers to you, Archy Marshall. I'll buy you a beer in 4 years.

Heavenly Beat

Heavenly Beat's website

The name sort of says it all. So now allow me to spend several sentences saying more so I can justify my existence. Heavenly Beat is a perfectly pleasant (my Oh My Rockness partner says I say bands sound "pleasant" too much; but if that's a crime, go ahead and kill me pleasantly) new band from John Pena. Pena is a member of the mighty Beach Fossils (who are also very pleasant), so if you like that band you just might like this band.

Heavenly Beat makes easy-going guitar pop (lots of pretty noodling floating around here) with surprisingly thump-ish beats beefing up the background. I also hear a hint of Flamenco in here, but I would need a more investigative Flamenco study to determine if that hint solves the mystery.

Let's go back to Beach Fossils for a minute because everyone else will: if Beach Fossils is surf-ish pop, think of Heavenly Beat as pina colada pop. This is the type of music to recline to, the type of music that takes stress and headaches away... unless you had 18 pina coladas as you were relaxing to this, of course. Then you'd just think Heavenly Beat was puke-pop. But that's not a Heavenly Beat issue, that's your issue of not knowing when to say when. Get help.

And get this perfectly pleasant band's debut 7" out now on Captured Tracks (home to almost everyone awesome). You're going to like this band. If you don't, you've probably told a 2-year-old that Santa Claus isn't real at some point in your life.

Selebrities

Selebrities's website

Selebrities is a trio from Brooklyn led by singer Maria Usbeck that plays moody post-something pop that will remind you of the early 2000s which reminded you of the early 1980s. Selebrities jams are full of those goth-y synths, sad guitar jingle-jangles, haunting bass lines, and lots of those scattered click-clack beats that like to go all noir.

Yes, there's definitely a Joy Division thing going on here and if you hate me for saying that in 2011, well, you haven't listened to Selebrities yet. So this is definitely not a new sound, or even a new OLD sound, but it's still a good sound. And good sounds is what it's all about, right?

Think of Selebrities as kind of like a really good slice of pizza. As you're eating it are you saying "well, this is nothing new... it's just melted cheese and tomato sauce and a crispy crust" or are you saying, "MDSHFOSDUFSNDDEDD" because your mouth is full of cheesy deliciousness?

You see? That's what I'm talking about when I talk about Selebrities. They're like a really good slice of pizza. You heard it here first and if you hear that anywhere else, our lawyer will be calling them soon.

Hoop Dreams have the quickest first step I've seen in about 5 years.

EDITOR'S NOTE: HOOP DREAMS IS NO LONGER PLAYING THIS WEEK AT GLASSLANDS. BUT READ THIS ANYWAY AND YOU CAN BE ALL LIKE 'DANG THAT SOUNDED LIKE A BAND I WOULD'VE WANTED TO SEE THIS WEEK!"
We could talk about Hoop Dreams all day. Not the band (yet) but the documentary. It's pretty much the greatest achievement in cinema history, and it's the reason why we're seriously still thinking of getting a "Tuss" tattoo to go along with our Georgetown Starter jacket with a pocket on the side while we go to Jewel to get our meats (we've seen that movie way too many times).

Anyway, Hoop Dreams the band is a really good band by any name. They're from Blacksburg, VA which is also the home of our very favorites, Wild Nothing. The comparisons between the two bands kind of end there though (no wait, they both share a label... Captured Tracks). We don't want to throw you off by mentioning Wild Nothing.

Hoop Dreams play something that can be described (and in fact will be described... by us) as surf-goth. Does making up a genre called surf-goth on the spot make you roll your eyes at best, and spit out your soda at your computer screen at worst? Sorry. But that's what we're hearing. There's the synth-y darkness and slightly ominous sounding vocals over guitar riffs that sound like, well, waves. That's what we hear and we stand by our decision to call it surf-goth.

If you like this, check out another new band we just wrote about called Frank (Just Frank). You could also check out early New Order, but you most likely already have. In conclusion, Hoop Dreams "has the quickest first step I've seen in about 5 years." (wow, writing this really makes us want to watch that again.)

Friends

Friends is a band of five based in Bushwick (that's in Brooklyn for the 99% of the population that doesn't think the borough is the center of the universe) that was started not too long ago by primary singer/songwriter Samantha Urbani (whose voice once received a Mariah Carey comparison?) and Lesley Hann. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're friends.

Anyway, the hype machine is off and chugging for Friends. But that's what happens when you throw down some seriously catchy beats and synths like this. As we all know, trains love beats and synths... it helps pass the time as they transport all that coal and cement and stuff.

People frequently compare Friends' sound to ESG. Did ESG invent beats? I wasn't aware of that. Better check Wikipedia. Friends also rock a similar sparkling sunshine-y vibe to that of Body Language, another recent Rockness favorite.

But comparisons can go out the window now. What you need to know is that Friends is dance-y and poppy and disco-y and a little post-punk-y. And their songs come with an aura of overall brightness. Goth, this is not.

So I guess this is all to say that Friends is a pretty damn good party band. A party band for happy ALTS, that is. Bushwick has a good scene these days, doesn't it? Oh. Sorry. Bushwick is a neighborhood in Brooklyn... which is a borough in New York City... which is this town on the East Coast.
